What Is a Trichologist? Understanding Hair and Scalp Expertise

A trichologist is a scalp and hair specialist that looks beyond the surface to understand patterns of hair loss, shedding, breakage and scalp imbalance. Learn what the role includes and when medical care comes first.

When your scalp keeps itching, your part looks wider, or you suddenly notice more hair in the shower, it can be difficult to know where to begin. A trichologist can help you better understand what may be happening and determine the most appropriate next step.

Trichology is the specialized study of the hair and scalp. A trained trichologist evaluates the pattern, timeline, symptoms, and possible contributing factors behind concerns such as:

  • Excessive shedding or thinning

  • Hair breakage

  • Flaking or buildup

  • Excess oil or dryness

  • Itching, tenderness, or scalp discomfort

  • Changes in hair density

The goal is not to treat every concern as the same problem. It is to look at the complete picture and identify visible patterns that may guide personalized scalp care or indicate the need for medical evaluation.

What Happens During a Trichology Consultation

Depending on your concerns, a consultation may include:

  • A discussion of your hair history, symptoms, health changes, medications, nutrition, and styling habits

  • Visual and magnified examination of the scalp, follicular openings, and hair shafts

  • Assessment of density, shedding, breakage, oil, flaking, buildup, and irritation

  • Standardized photographs for progress monitoring

  • Personalized scalp-care and home-care recommendations

  • Medical referral when necessary

Magnified scalp imaging can reveal details that are difficult to see in the mirror, but it does not replace bloodwork, a scalp biopsy, or a physician’s diagnosis.

What Is HALO DNA Testing

For some clients, we may recommend optional HALO DNA testing as part of a comprehensive hair-loss consultation.

HALO is a noninvasive cheek-swab test that analyzes genetic markers associated with hair health and possible treatment-response patterns. The report may provide insight into areas such as:

  • Genetic sensitivity to DHT

  • Inflammatory and antioxidant response

  • Circulation and collagen-related pathways

  • Vitamin and mineral metabolism

  • Possible response patterns involving certain hair-loss therapies

It is one additional source of information that may be considered alongside your history, scalp examination, symptoms, and appropriate medical testing.

Trichologist Versus Dermatologist

A dermatologist is a licensed medical doctor who diagnoses and treats diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatologists can prescribe medication, order laboratory tests, and perform biopsies.

A trichologist has specialized education in hair and scalp concerns but is not automatically a physician or dermatologist. Trichology is not a medical license in the United States.

The two roles can complement one another. A dermatologist may diagnose and medically treat the condition, while a trichologist supports scalp care, client education, home-care practices, and progress monitoring.

What Does Board Certification Mean

Soohwa Spa’s board certification is awarded through the American Naturopathic Medical Certification Board, or ANMCB. ANMCB is separate from the American Naturopathic Medical Association, or ANMA, which is a professional membership organization.

ANMCB board certification reflects an additional credentialing process and requires ongoing renewal and continuing education.

The Soohwa Approach

At Soohwa Spa, trichology guides how we observe, educate, and personalize scalp care. We begin with the condition and pattern of your scalp rather than placing every client into the same program.

Your consultation may help determine whether the priority is barrier support, buildup management, hair-density support, personalized home care, progress monitoring, HALO DNA testing, or medical referral.

Our role is not to promise a cure or replace your doctor. It is to help you understand your hair and scalp more clearly and move toward a more informed next step.

If you are experiencing persistent flaking, scalp discomfort, excessive shedding, breakage, or changing density, schedule a Scalp Analysis and Trichology Consultation at Soohwa Spa in San Pedro.
